Periodontics (Gum Disease Treatment)

Our periodontal team can provide tailored and minimally invasive gum disease treatment to renew your gum health and help you prevent serious damage to your mouth in the future.

Introducing… Periodontics (Gum Disease Treatment)

  • Treatment: treatment for advancing and advanced gum disease.
  • Duration of results: variable depending on how you care for your smile in the future.
  • Benefits: stabilises your gum health and oral environment.
  • Methods: multidisciplinary treatment using surgical and non-surgical techniques.

What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum disease – the most common reason for tooth loss in adults.

Periodontal disease doesn’t just affect your gum tissue, it can deteriorate the supporting jawbone underneath the gum too. Whether your gum health is in the early stages of deteriorating, or you require more intensive intervention to resolve gum complications, our experienced periodontal team can help nurse your mouth back to health.

What Type of Periodontal Treatment Do I Need?

  • Oral Hygiene Cleaning
If your gum disease has not yet progressed to becoming severe, we may be able to address it using non-surgical methods. This involves removing plaque and tartar from along your gum line using a technique called scaling and root planing.
  • Surgical Periodontal Treatment
Advanced gum disease may require surgical intervention. Our surgical periodontal treatments are carried out using gentle techniques, and we offer our patients sedation if they need extra assistance relaxing during their treatment.
  • Crown Lengthening
In cases where a buried tooth structure cannot be accessed fully to place a crown or for patients who show too much gum when they smile – “gummy smile”, your dentist can raise a small gum flap, giving them this access and allowing the elongation of teeth to reduce the amount of gum show. Various restorative treatments can then be carried out to enhance the smile.
  • Regenerative Procedures
When gum tissue and bone have been eroded due to gum disease, gum grafts and bone regeneration can be carried out to rebuild these essential structures.Gum recession is a common issue that can occur as a result of periodontal disease as well as overbrushing your teeth. Once recession has occurred the dentin underneath your enamel is greatly exposed to acid attacks and decay, as it is a weaker structure than enamel. A gum graft can be performed to renew areas of exposed dentin, using gum structure from your palate.
  • Pocket Reduction Procedures
Small pockets can form in your gum tissue when gum disease starts to take hold. These can be closed, preventing plaque and tartar from reaching underneath your gum line and attacking the vulnerable dentine covering your tooth roots.
  • Aftercare
Your treatment will be followed up with tailored short and long-term aftercare advice. This is one of the most important elements of any periodontal treatment, as daily prevention is essential to stop advanced gum disease from returning and causing even further damage to your health. Our dentists will be a continual source of positive reinforcement every time you come in for a check-up, helping you to maintain good oral health habits for life.

FAQs

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a condition that deteriorates the gums and jaw. It occurs when the plaque and tartar settle along your gum line, inflaming the gums and creating pockets through which bacteria can access your tooth roots and bloodstream.

What Symptoms Should I Look Out For?

When you come in for your routine hygienist check-ups, a full examination of your mouth is performed to check your gum health status.

If you notice any of the following symptoms in the time between check-ups, we encourage you to make an appointment with us instead of waiting for your upcoming check-up.

  • Bleeding gums.
  • Inflamed and painful gums.
  • Loose teeth.
  • A bad taste in your mouth.

Why Is Treating Gum Disease So Important For Your Health?

Gum disease doesn’t just affect your mouth, but your general health too. Without proper treatment, gum disease can have a significant impact on heart and neurological functions, as a result of plaque entering your bloodstream.

The good news is that with regular hygienist check-ups and personalised periodontal treatment, gum disease can be stabilised and your oral structures can be salvaged.
